Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 - Oct. 15

Hispanic Heritage Month is upon us and UAFS has some really exciting events planned!

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th – October 15th. Several Latin American countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate their independence from Spain on September 15. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and 18, respectively. October 12 is significant as well because it is Colombus Day or Día de la Raza, which is celebrated in most Latin American countries.

Hispanic vs. Latino

-Hispanic means of Spanish speaking origin, which includes Spain.

-Latino refers to people of Latin American origin; it includes Brazil and excludes Spain.

Why Learn Spanish?

  1. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world and it is the official language of 21 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
  2. Learning Spanish as a second language enhances career opportunities, promotes cultural awareness and competency, and it provides a great opportunity for understanding cultures other than one’s own.
