UAFS to Showcase 9/11 Exhibit Sept. 5-12
The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s annual exhibit featuring photographs taken during the Sept. 11 attacks will be on display this year from Sept. 5-12 in the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center, located at 800 N. 49th Street.
Blood Drive at UAFS to be Held Sept. 12-13
The University of Arkansas Fort Smith’s first blood drive of the new school year will be held from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 12-13 in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center, with donors receiving a “Win from Within” T-shirt.
Branford Marsalis to Kick Off Season of Entertainment Sept. 7
A musician considered “the most respected living U.S. jazz instrumentalist” will bring his quartet to Fort Smith to kick off Season of Entertainment 37 at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith with a concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 7.
UAFS Graduate Spends Summer Traveling the Globe
UAFS alumnus Jesus Sedeno-Gutierrez recently returned from his summer trip, aptly named “34 Days Around the World.” While abroad, Sedeno-Gutierrez visited six countries: Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Spain, Germany, and Scotland.

Rodney O. Parks, senior director of major and planned gifts at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Foundation, received the Crystal Apple Award by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in San Francisco on Monday.

When University of Arkansas – Fort Smith student Justin Kazy of Van Buren traveled to the IEEE robotics competition in Denver, Colo., earlier this month, his goal was to place in the top 10. He easily surpassed that goal when he placed fourth at the competition out of 32 competing teams comprised of undergraduates from other universities in the region.

When Skyler Webster of Poteau, Okla., applied for the prestigious Chancellor’s Leadership Council Scholarship at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, she didn’t think she would receive the scholarship. Since she suffered from test anxiety, her ACT score was below the recommended score to receive the scholarship. But the CLC scholarship took more into consideration than just test scores. After two rounds of interviews with Dr. Paul B. Beran, UAFS chancellor, and other administrators, Webster was chosen to receive the scholarship, which has led to a wealth of involvement opportunities for Webster at UAFS.

The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith has hired a new director to oversee its Boreham Library. Anne Liebst, formerly the discovery and access coordinator for the Ottenheimer Library at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been named the new director of library services at UAFS. Her start date was March 13.

It was 1975, and Lap Bui was crammed beside his family in a fishing boat drifting in the South China Sea several miles off the coast of Vietnam. Bui’s family of eight had loaded into the boat in an effort to escape the turmoil of the Vietnam War, and was near starvation after floating aimlessly for two weeks before being rescued by an American ship. Now, 42 years later and having found a better life in America, Bui was recognized for his accomplishments as a successful businessman, involved Fort Smith community member, and loving father and husband when he received the Diligence to Victory Award by the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s Alumni Association as part of the university’s homecoming festivities, an award recognizing notable UAFS alumni.

14 years ago, Jeremy May was working as a waiter at a local restaurant without direction in his life, when he decided he wanted to better himself by attending the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. That decision paid dividends for May. In addition to graduating from UAFS, securing employment from ArcBest Corp., and flourishing as a local entrepreneur and community member, May was recently recognized by receiving the UAFS Alumni Association’s Young Alumni Award, given for the first time this year as part of the university’s homecoming celebrations.
