UAFS to Host Opioid Summit June 20
A summit to discuss opioid abuse in the Fort Smith community will be held from 12:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. June 20 at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith that will include Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, state representatives, and representatives from local agencies.
UAFS Alumnus Competes on “American Ninja Warrior”
The third time was the charm for Cody Johnston. The Fort Smith native and University of Arkansas – Fort Smith alumnus competed for a third time on the popular television show “American Ninja Warrior,” a competition in which contestants attempt to navigate an obstacle course quicker than their opponents. For the first time, his run made the cut to be televised on the show, which aired June 6.
UAFS Receives $15,000 Big Read Grant from NEA
Thanks to a $15,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will host an NEA Big Read in Fort Smith this year, a community reading program with activities centered around a select book that includes a visit from the author.
Summer Pell Available for UAFS Students
While Brooke Arnold of Hackett only had two classes left to graduate from the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith after this spring semester, she began looking for a way to earn those credits without having to complete another 16-week semester as a working mother. Thanks to a change in Pell Grants this year that allow students additional grant monies for summer courses, she won’t have to.
Fifteen Summer Camps Offered through UAFS
Local children will have a slate of 15 summer camps to choose from throughout the season, with topics ranging from music to engineering to athletics.
UAFS, ARCOM Collaborate on Student Research
Thanks to a collaboration between the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith and the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM), UAFS students had the opportunity to conduct hands-on research projects that could also lead to new treatments of neurodegenerative diseases and cancers.
UAFS to Hold Commercial Drone Course in June
The Center for Business and Professional Development at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith will host a four-day test preparation course for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 107 test to become a commercial operator of unmanned aerial aircraft, more commonly known as drones.
UAFS Graduate Commissioned as Second Lieutenant
While hundreds of University of Arkansas – Fort Smith graduates were recognized at commencement May 12, one UAFS graduate was also honored May 11 for his commissioning as a second lieutenant into the Arkansas Army National Guard.
Hale Named to Northwest Arkansas Business Journal’s Fast 15
Jordan Hale, director of government and community relations at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith and a UAFS alumnus, was recently recognized for his work by being named to the Fast 15, an annual list of top professionals in their twenties published by the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal.
UAFS “Success Stories” Graduate May 12
“There are between 600-800 students who will receive their degrees from this wonderful institution this spring,” said Dr. Don Bobbitt, president of the University of Arkansas System, during his address to UAFS graduates. “But to me, it’s 800 success stories.” Those stories saw their end – and the beginning of countless new success stories – at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith’s commencement ceremonies held in the Stubblefield Center May 12.
