Spencer, Jolie Receive Speakman Staff Awards
Tammy Spencer of Poteau, Okla., assistant director of procurement and contracts, and Danielle Jolie of Fort Smith, director of academic services and academic coordinator in the College of Applied Science and Technology, were honored as outstanding employees during the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s annual staff meeting Sept. 26.
UAFS Student Receives Prestigious Artists 360 Grant
Two years ago, University of Arkansas – Fort Smith student Lynette Thrower wrote her first short story that she thought was good enough to be published, uncovering a passion for writing she didn’t know she had. This fall, after four years of study in the university’s English program, she’s received a prestigious grant from Artists 360, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance made possible through the support of the Walton Family Foundation. The opportunity will help her unlock the passion for writing in others while also telling stories of underserved populations in the area.
UAFS Announces $10.8 Million Estate Gift
Myles Friedman might have been a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but his heart always stayed in Fort Smith, the city where he grew up and began his college career. Now, Friedman’s legacy will stay in Fort Smith as well. The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith announced on Sept. 25 a $10.8 million estate gift to the university from the late engineer and former Westark Community College faculty member, the third-largest gift in the university’s history and the largest gift given to UAFS by an individual.
Political Candidates to Share Visions During Five Town Halls at UAFS
Candidates for city, county, and state elective offices will be able to share their respective visions for a better Arkansas during five town halls slated next month at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith.
UAFS and First National Bank to Host Debt Workshop for Students
First National Bank of Fort Smith and the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s College of Business will team up to help educate students about the federal budget and national debt by hosting an interactive workshop from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.

Adjusting to college life can be hard. The 22 resident assistants named for the upcoming year at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith plan to make it easier.  
Redefining Interim: Serna Plans for Year of “Action and Innovation”
Edward Serna wants to redefine the role of interim chancellor. “People think of interims as stopgaps,” said Serna, who assumed the role of interim chancellor at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Sept. 1. “We don’t want this to be thought of as a stopgap year or a transition period. Fort Smith and our students deserve more. This community wants action and innovation, and we’re going to give them both this year.”
