Textbooks Now Available to Check out at UAFS Library
The most affordable university in the state just got a little more affordable thanks to an initiative by University of Arkansas – Fort Smith students. Tatiana Scharr of Fort Smith and Austin Lloyd of Pearland, Texas, led an effort with the help of the UAFS Lions Bookstore to have the Boreham Library at UAFS offer textbooks of general education courses at the university. Students can reserve the book for an hour at a time and are required to read it at the library.

Mary Shepard: The Art of Tolerance
When she first encountered the painting The Descent from the Cross by Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden in college, Mary Shepard was intrigued. In fact, she said, it started her thinking about becoming an art historian. Flash forward: Dr. Mary B. Shepard, having completed her fifth year as the art historian at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, has a chance to fly to Spain for research, thanks to the Lucille Speakman Legacy Endowment. In Madrid, she stops at the Prado National Museum. There she sees in person The Descent from the Cross and realizes she is encountering it for the first time.
Markham to be Guest Speaker at UAFS Fall Commencement
Dr. Maria Markham, director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, will serve as the guest speaker for the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s fall commencement ceremony held at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Stubblefield Center on UAFS campus.

Kappa Delta Pi Initiates New Members and Presents Graduation Cords
Fourteen students and two faculty members in the School of Education at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith have been inducted into the Alpha Beta Omega chapter of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education during an initiation ceremony that also recognized senior members of the society. Five members were also presented graduation cords.

A $30,295 grant from the Blue & You Foundation will help dental hygiene students at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith provide preventive dental services to children in low-income families in the Fort Smith area.
