University of Arkansas – Fort Smith jazz bands will perform a concert featuring a variety of music at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 as part of the university’s Season of Entertainment 35.
The UAFS Jazz Band and Jazz Catz will perform the concert at the ArcBest Corporation Performing Arts Center in the Fort Smith Convention Center, located at 55 South 7th St. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased through the UAFS Box Office at 479-788-7300.
The band will perform a mix of jazz, blues, swing, pop and funk, featuring the work of artists from Duke Ellington, Henry Mancini and Andy Williams, as well as hit songs recorded by the Beatles, Ray Charles, Robert Johnson and Toto.
“The UAFS Jazz Band prides itself on the performance of a wide variety of jazz styles,” said Dr. Christopher Barrick, head of the Department of Music and Theatre and director of the Jazz Band. “This November, we will perform classics from legendary bands such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra and Count Basie Orchestra, as well as more modern selections popularized by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band.”
Dr. Andrew DeBoer, visiting assistant professor of music, will also perform with the bands for the piece “Concerto for Clarinet.”
The Jazz Catz is under the direction of Don Bailey, UAFS director of jazz studies.
