Tanner Receives Mentoring Award

Dr. TannerDr. Margaret Tanner of Fort Smith, associate provost and director of graduate studies at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, received the KPMG Mentoring Award from the Gender Issues and Worklife Balance Section of the American Accounting Association.

Tanner received the award from the American Accounting Association at its annual conference for accounting academics and professionals. The award recognizes a special mentor who has affected the lives of women and men in accounting, and nominees are submitted by section members and colleagues.

Tanner served as president of the Gender Issues and Worklife Balance Section of the American Accounting Association for the 2014-15 school year. The purpose of the section is to facilitate interaction among its members regarding gender issues and worklife balance as they relate to accounting practice, research, and education.

“I am honored to have received this award from my peers in the AAA,” Tanner said. “I am committed to my profession and the possibilities it offers to women and men in their pursuit of a career path. Accountants serve a critical function in a modern business setting, and gaining a sense of professional identity is important for those that enter this field. I have always tried to share this perspective with students as they explore options for their future.”

Tanner has served as associate provost and director of graduate studies since March 2016. Previously, she served as interim dean of the College of Business at UAFS for over two years. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Fort Lewis College and a masters and doctorate in accounting from the University of North Texas.
