Myles Friedman might have been a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but his heart always stayed in Fort Smith, the city where he grew up and began his college career. Now, Friedman’s legacy will stay in Fort Smith as well. The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith announced on Sept. 25 a $10.8 million estate gift to the university from the late engineer and former Westark Community College faculty member, the third-largest gift in the university’s history and the largest gift given to UAFS by an individual.
Candidates for city, county, and state elective offices will be able to share their respective visions for a better Arkansas during five town halls slated next month at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith.
First National Bank of Fort Smith and the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith’s College of Business will team up to help educate students about the federal budget and national debt by hosting an interactive workshop from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.
Adjusting to college life can be hard. The 22 resident assistants named for the upcoming year at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith plan to make it easier.  
Edward Serna wants to redefine the role of interim. “People think of interims as stopgaps,” said Serna, who assumed the role of interim chancellor at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith Sept. 1. “We don’t want this to be thought of as a stopgap year or a transition period. Fort Smith and our students deserve more. This community wants action and innovation, and we’re going to give them both this year.”

UAFS Slates Majors Expo for Sept. 20
The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith will hold its annual Majors Expo from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center, offering students an opportunity to choose from the university’s more than 60 baccalaureate degree offerings.
Tejas Brothers to Perform Sept. 18 at Blue Lion
The Tejas Brothers, an acclaimed musical quartet from Texas known for their blend of "Tex-Mex Honky Tonk", will return to Fort Smith for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 18 as part of the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith's Season at The Blue Lion.
Fall Move-In Slated for Aug. 16-18
University of Arkansas - Fort Smith students will move into campus housing 9 a.m.-noon Aug. 16, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 17, and 9 a.m.-noon Aug. 18, with help from the UAFS campus community.
