The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is issuing an invitation to all high school and college trumpet players to participate in TrumpetFEST on Jan. 25.
Dr. Matt Vangjel of Fort Smith, assistant professor of music (high brass) and director of the UAFS Jazz Band, is conducting the event, which will include an afternoon of classes and rehearsal from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. concert in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
“This is an opportunity for those who play trumpet to play alongside other local trumpet players, play different and challenging repertoire in a chamber setting and work with university faculty,” said Vangjel.
Band directors are also invited to the event, which will be held in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.
“There will be small trumpet ensembles, a mass trumpet choir and all-state prep classes,” Vangjel explained. “The day’s activities are centered around ensemble playing. But through these ensemble experiences, we will address issues that all trumpet players face.”
Vangjel joined the music faculty in 2011. In addition to his duties at UAFS, Vangjel is an active performer in and around Fort Smith and in the Kansas City area.
He previously was principal trumpet with the Northland Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City and most recently the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra. He also is called upon as a featured soloist and performed earlier this year as a soloist with the Kansas City Civic Orchestra.
He has held positions in a wide variety of groups including the Kansas City Ballet Orchestra, the New Dinner Theater (Broadway shows), and the internationally acclaimed Fountain City Brass Band, where he has shared the stage with well-known artists like Wycliffe Gordon, Jens Lindemann and Joe Burgstaller.
Although there is no fee to participate and no registration deadline, reservations are requested by Jan. 22. For more information, contact Vangjel at 479-788-7538 or email@example.com.
