UPD Arrests Student for Carrying Gun

University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Police Department arrested 23-year-old Brett Ward of Greenwood at approximately noon on Wednesday for carrying a handgun on campus.

UAFS officers acted on a tip and took the student into custody Wednesday after asking the student to step outside the class he was attending. Ward admitted to officers he did have a gun in his possession during the previous day’s class and again on Wednesday. Officers then removed Ward’s possessions from the classroom, confiscating a 9 mm Glock and placing Ward under arrest.

UAFS Chancellor Dr. Paul B. Beran said there was no danger to students, faculty or staff at any time.

“We are serious about the safety and welfare of those on our campus,” said Beran.

“UPD acted within their authority as sworn officers for the state of Arkansas and will do so at any time, not only to promote safety on campus but to comply with state laws.”

The law specific to university campuses is A.C.A. 5-73-306, which prohibits a concealed handgun “…on any school, college, community college or university campus or building…”
