"Dromium" Encore on Feb. 25

University of Arkansas - Fort Smith theatre students will stage an encore performance of the award-winning original stage production “Dromnium” Feb. 25 as a fund raiser to send the cast and crew of 50 to produce the show for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival regional festival in Shreveport, La.

The 7:30 p.m. show will be held at the Arkansas Best Performing Arts Center in the Fort Smith Convention Center, 55 S. 7th St.

“When you see a live performance in a theatre, it’s ephemeral and once it’s over, it’s over,” said Bob Stevenson of Fort Smith, the show’s director. “This is a chance to see it again with the original cast and crew. People who missed it during its original run now have a chance to see a production of a show that’s acknowledged as an award winner.”

The show takes its name from a Danish expression for “dreamland,” according to Stevenson. It recounts the dreams of two people who are in a conflicted personal relationship with each other through a continuum of events, impressions and dream-like sensations, according to Stevenson.

“We were very pleased that the Arkansas State Festival of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival gave so many awards to our production in November, especially to the men and women who worked so hard on the technical aspects of it,” said Stevenson. “Now we need money for 50 cast and crew members to travel to Shreveport. This performance is intended to help with that.”

Following the Fort Smith performance, the cast and crew will strike the set, get some sleep and leave for Shreveport the following morning. They will be back on stage the next day, according to Stevenson.

“Our show was one of six productions selected out of more than 100 shows from this region,” Stevenson said. “It’s quite an honor, and we think we have a good chance of bringing top honors back to the people of Fort Smith. That’s why we want to participate in this festival.”
