Choirs to Perform ECCO Concert Feb. 28

The Department of Music at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will present the UAFS Chorale and Women’s Chorus in a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at Grand Avenue Baptist Church, 3900 Grand Ave.

This annual concert, which is open to the public, is titled ECCO, or Eclectic Choral Concert Opportunity, and features a wide array of choral music presented by the two choirs.

According to Dr. Rager H. Moore II of Prairie Grove, UAFS director of choral activities, “ecco” is an Italian word that can mean “here” and “there,” and this year’s concert offers music from all over.

“The concert will feature original compositions by native Arkansas composer Michael Simpson and by current Arkansas composer and UAFS student Katrina Brandli,” he said. “In addition, there will be music from Venezuela, Africa and Russia -- literally, music from the around the world.”

Moore added that both the audience and the choir members enjoy the musical sounds that result from Grand Avenue Baptist Church’s acoustically flattering hall.

“We choose the music specifically for this venue,” Moore added, “both for the acoustics and because it gives our students the opportunity to work with instruments available at the church.”
