Prospective students and their parents who need help completing federal and state financial aid applications can receive that assistance March 10 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.
UAFS is participating in a statewide effort -- called College Goal Sunday -- from 2-4 p.m. in the Baldor Technology Center, 5100 Kinkead Ave., as a way to ease the application process for students and their parents, according to Alan Pixley of Fort Smith, director of financial aid.
“Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid can be intimidating,” said Pixley, “but our staff will be there to help guide applicants through each step of the application. We want to do whatever we can to help students move to a higher level of education and, ultimately, graduate from college.”
Pixley said College Goal Sunday is not just for those students who have already committed to attend a college or university.
“Someone who is not sure, but is just thinking about college should attend College Goal Sunday,” said Pixley. “This is the perfect place to get information and help in making that decision. We want to make college seem less of a mystery and more of a possibility.”
Pixley said current UAFS students are also welcome to attend the event, which is free and open to the public. Sign-in tables will be located at entrances to Baldor.
Since the FAFSA requires the most recent tax information, families should bring copies of their W-2 forms, Social Security numbers, amounts of untaxed 2012 income, amounts of child support paid or received in 2012, knowledge of checking and savings account balances and knowledge of the worth of other family assets.
More than 30 college, university and high school campuses across the state are participating in the event in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, which sponsors Say Go College Week with the U.S. Department of Education.
It is not necessary to pre-register for College Goal Sunday. More information is available by calling the Financial Aid Office at 479-788-7090.
