Leadership Fort Smith Nominations Open

Barbara Harvel of Fort Smith is looking for a few great leaders -- 25 to be exact -- for the Leadership Fort Smith Class of 2014.

“Who do you know personally that is a great leader, someone that is constantly leading the way on a project, someone that always steps up to the plate in a time of need or someone that never asks for a thank you?” said Harvel, LFS director at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

“It could be your boss or a co-worker, maybe a friend or even a family or church member,” said Harvel. “Or, maybe it's you.”

Harvel said nominations are now open for the next class for Leadership Fort Smith, a regional issues-oriented education program offered through UAFS that takes a year-long look into what makes Fort Smith what it is and how participants can make the community even better.

“Leadership Fort Smith is all about learning, connecting and leading,” said Harvel. “Each class of Leadership Fort Smith is made up of a group of community-minded individuals of all ages, from all walks of life. Some are current leaders. Some have been leaders in the community for a long time, and some are up-and-coming or even future leaders. What they all have in common is that they are people who are interested in serving our region and making it a better place.”

She said participants get the unique opportunity “to see Fort Smith like they've never seen it before” during 10 full-day monthly sessions held August through April in multiple settings. Class members also attend opening and closing retreats and a commencement banquet.

“From history to education, economic development and local and state government to law enforcement, and a look at the judicial and health and human services in our area, LFS is truly a hands-on approach to learning what makes this community great,” said Harvel.

The 25 individuals selected for each class come from various professions, businesses, organizations, governmental and educational entities. An individual nominated may be anyone living or working in the Greater Fort Smith region. Self-nominations are also welcomed and encouraged.

To nominate someone for Leadership Fort Smith, go to www.uafs.edu/lfs and click on “Nomination Form.” To complete an application, click on “LFS Application.” Applications are due by May 24.
