26 Win ACTM Regional Awards

Twenty-six students from area junior and senior high schools received awards March 2 in the Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematics regional mathematics contest held on the campus of the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

 

Six different math contests are part of the competition, according to Dr. J.C. Price of Fort Smith, assistant professor of mathematics at UAFS.

 

UAFS, with more than 530 students participating this year, is one of several higher education institutions in Arkansas which host the regional competition. Winners at the UAFS event go to the ACTM state contest on April 27.

 

Winners included:

 

Statistics: Rachael Davis, Southside High School, first place; Lexus Raney, Southside High School, second place; and Lauren Bruce and Mollie Hicks, Southside High School, third place.

 

Calculus: Christopher Pham, Southside High School, first place; Tae Su Cho, Subiaco Academy, second place; William Vearriis, Northside High School, third place; and Jungho Lee of Subiaco Academy, Sami Sexton of Southside High School and Anastastya Kouchuck of Southside High School, honorable mentions.

 

Precalculus and Trigonometry: Jan Woo Chang, Subiaco Academy, first place; Hyung Man Bae, Subiaco Academy, second place; and Benjamin Winter, Episcopal Collegiate School, third place.

 

Algebra II: Kayla Vinh, Southside High School, first place; Alex Williams, Southside High School, second place; and Blake Larkin, Southside High School, third place.

 

Algebra I: Saurabh Shah, Chaffin Junior High, first place; Paige Green, Alma Middle School, second place; Karen Morris, Alma Middle School, third place; and Rebecca Parham of Alma Middle School, Nicole Doan of Trinity Junior High and Tyler Mazaheri of Trinity Junior High, honorable mentions.

 

Geometry: Yuan Taeb Oh, Subiaco Academy, first place; Kristina Pham, Chaffin Junior High, second place; Gavin Clark, Chaffin Junior High, third place; and William Montgomery of Trinity Junior High, Dong Hyun Shin of Subiaco Academy and Angel Young of Chaffin Junior High, honorable mentions.

 

Competing at UAFS were students from Alma Middle School, Booneville Junior High, Chaffin Junior High, Clarksville High School, Kimmons Junior High, Northside High School, Ramsey Junior High School, Southside High School, Subiaco Academy, Trinity Junior High, Life Way Christian School, Mountainburg High School, Gravette High School, Russellville High School, Mountainburg High School and Cedarville High School and Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock.

 

The mathematics competitions are sponsored by the Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematics, whose purpose is to encourage an active interest in mathematics and improve teaching of mathematics.
