Symphonic Band to Perform April 16

Dr. Alexandra Zacharella, director of bands at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, said those attending the UAFS Symphonic Band Concert on April 16 will enjoy an evening of symphonic works by classical composers like William Schuman, Fisher Tull, Eric Whitacre and Dmitri Shostakovich.

 

The 7:30 p.m. event, which will be performed at the Arkansas Best Corp. Performing Arts Center at the Fort Smith Convention Center, is part of Season of Entertainment 32 sponsored by UAFS.

 

“Our repertoire this spring will include some of the best-known wind-band compositions from the 19th and 20th centuries,” said Zacharella. “We invite all music lovers in Fort Smith to come out and experience the variety in our musical selections and the excellence of our band members.”

 

Zacharella, a New Jersey native who moved to Fort Smith in 2007, is also an assistant professor of low brass in the Music Department. She has bachelor’s degrees in trombone performance and music education from The Hartt School at the University of Hartford (Conn.) and a master’s degree in trombone performance from the University of Michigan's School of Music. She is a graduate of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California and completed a doctorate in trombone performance with minors in music education, conducting and jazz studies.

 

Zacharella serves on the board of the College Music Society as chair of the International Initiatives Committee and is currently the state president for ArkCBDNA (College Band Directors National Association).
