Artwork by a Fort Smith native is on display in the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith through Nov. 30, with a reception slated for 5 p.m. Oct. 11.
The exhibit showcases paintings and drawings by Joshua Gilcrease, with nearly 40 works on display. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
A self-taught artist and Van Buren High School graduate, Gilcrease has drawn and painted “since [he] could grip a pencil.” While he does commissioned art, the exhibit features artworks he has created in his spare time. This is his first exhibit.
Gilcrease has worked a wide range of jobs while pursuing a career as an artist, from working in a slaughterhouse to a head instrument tech for a local hospital.
The exhibit is sponsored by the Chancellor’s Coalition for the Visual Arts and is located on the west end of the first floor of the campus center, which is located at 800 N. 49th Street. Exhibit hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays. For more information about the exhibit, contact the UAFS Box Office at 479-788-7300.
