Students moving into campus housing Aug. 15-18 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will have a bit of assistance from the Chancellor’s Move-In Crew, including the chancellor himself.
Volunteers are currently signing up for time slots during the move-in event at both Sebastian Commons and The Lion’s Den. Dr. Paul B. Beran is scheduled for 9-11 a.m. Aug. 17 at The Lion’s Den, where he will be on hand to welcome UAFS students.
Beran said he believes in the importance of students feeling grounded as they begin working on their baccalaureate degrees and that developing relationships where they are housed can contribute to that.
“We’ve found that those who resided in The Lion’s Den the past two years brought a tremendous amount of campus pride to UAFS,” he said. “They became a tightly knit group, and their enthusiasm was contagious. We want this new group to feel welcome to our campus and to feel that enthusiasm and energy from those who have come before them.”
Beth Eppinger, director of housing and residential life, said it is a big challenge to get the students moved in and that it wouldn’t be possible without the volunteer help.
“Our volunteers do whatever is needed during their time slots,” she said, “which can include unloading of vehicles, carrying boxes to student rooms, assisting with room set-up, providing water to parents and students, removing trash and assisting with parking.”
Eppinger said the Chancellor’s Move-In Crew will be provided with bright yellow T-shirts, which identifies them as the crew and also provides students and parents with a welcome to campus when they see them.
The Lion’s Den, located on the corner of Waldron and Kinkead, opened in fall 2010 and primarily houses freshmen students. It has indoor corridor entrances to student rooms. Sebastian Commons, located west of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center, is apartment-style housing. The two units provide housing for approximately 1,000 students.
Eppinger said any questions from parents or students about move-in should be sent to email@example.com. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 20.
